UK card payment statistics: the numbers, with sources
UK consumers and businesses made 48.8 billion payments in 2024, and debit cards alone accounted for 53% of them, according to UK Finance's Payment Markets Report 2025. Cash fell from 12% to 9% of all payments — for the first time it was not even the UK's second most-used payment method, overtaken by Direct Debit, Faster Payments and credit cards. Every figure here comes from a named public source, linked at the bottom.
Contactless is the default at the till
UK Finance's monthly card spending updates through 2025 put contactless at 76-78% of all debit card transactions and 66-67% of credit card transactions, month after month. UK debit cards processed around 2.3 billion transactions in a single month (October 2025, up 1.2% on a year earlier). For a shop, cafe or pub, the tap is now the normal transaction and everything else is the exception.
Where cards are heading
UK Finance projects cards will account for around 67% of all UK payments by 2034, up from roughly six in ten today, with cash continuing its long decline. None of the published projections show that trend reversing.
What the numbers mean for a small business
Three things follow from the data. Card acceptance is infrastructure now — at 9% of payments and falling, cash-only trading turns away most of how the country pays. Card fees are therefore a permanent cost line worth managing like rent or energy; our guide to reading your card statement shows how to work out what you actually pay. And because card takings are verifiable revenue, the same terminal that takes payment doubles as trading evidence when a business applies for funding — the mechanism behind card-sales-based finance.
