What the numbers look like on a restaurant floor
A restaurant taking £18,000 a month on card at a £45 average cover puts roughly 400 card payments through the floor every month. At 1.2% that is £216 a month in transaction fees, and 0.1% either way moves it by £18. The line that moves further is terminal rental: review sites checked in August 2026 report Dojo advertising £25 a month for the Go Max and £20 for the Pocket, and a four-handset floor turns that into a bill worth arguing over.
Interchange is the floor under any quote, capped in the UK at 0.2% on consumer debit and 0.3% on consumer credit by the Interchange Fee Regulation, in force since 9 December 2015 and enforced by the Payment Systems Regulator. Corporate cards were never inside those caps and cost more to accept. A restaurant with a heavy expense-account lunch trade will not price like one feeding families on a Sunday, whatever the headline rate says.
Most covers under £100 will be a tap, because that is the single-payment contactless ceiling the card issuer sets, with £300 as the running total before a PIN is requested. A table of six splitting a £240 bill four ways gets four taps and no PIN. The same table paying as one goes to chip and PIN, which is a small thing until it happens at the end of a Saturday service.
