What it costs to take the card at the door
The fee is the easy part to price. At Dojo's published all-in rate of 1.2% for businesses under £100,000 a year in card turnover, read from its own pricing page in August 2026, a £2,000 job costs £24 to take on the card. On £4,000 a month of card work the whole fee bill is £48. One unpaid £600 invoice costs more than a year of it.
Two parts of any rate are not the provider's to set. Interchange, the share paid to the customer's bank, is capped at 0.2% on consumer debit and 0.3% on consumer credit under the Interchange Fee Regulation, in force since 9 December 2015. And the £100 limit on a single contactless tap, with £300 as the running total before a PIN is asked for, comes from the card issuer. A £2,000 job is always going to be chip and PIN or a payment link, whatever machine you are holding.
Payouts land the next working day, weekends included, so a Saturday call-out is in the account on Sunday morning. For a sole trader buying materials on a personal card that is the difference between funding the next job and waiting on the last one.
Where a terminal is the wrong tool: work quoted and won weeks in advance. There a payment link sent with the quote gets the deposit in before you load the van, and the terminal only handles the balance.
