How to Cancel SumUp
Cancelling SumUp is straightforward. Open the app, tap Settings > Close Account, and confirm. No contract to argue about, no exit fees, no letter to send. The only thing you need to watch out for is making sure your last payout has cleared before you close. We walk businesses through this every week.

Step-by-Step: How to Cancel SumUp
Wait for your last payout to land
Check the SumUp app for any pending transactions. SumUp takes 1-3 business days to pay out, so give it until the money is actually in your bank. This is the number one thing people rush and regret. Do not close until that last payout shows in your account.
Download your sales history
Log into the SumUp Dashboard on a computer, go to your sales reports, and export everything as a CSV. Once the account is closed, your data is gone permanently. Takes five minutes and saves a lot of frustration later if you ever need to check an old transaction.
Switch off any paid SumUp add-ons
Using SumUp POS or the SumUp Business Account with a monthly plan? Cancel those first under your billing settings. Otherwise they keep charging even after you think you have left. We see this catch people out all the time.
Close the account - it takes two taps
Open the SumUp app, go to Settings > Close Account, and confirm. No phone call, no letter, no 30-day notice. It is instant. You will get a confirmation email straight away.
Have your Dojo terminal ready first
If you are upgrading to a proper countertop machine, get it set up before you close SumUp. We typically deliver and set up a Dojo terminal within 24-48 hours, so you can go straight from one to the other without a gap. Ring us on 0333 041 3933 and we will sort it.
What Happens to Your SumUp Reader
You own your SumUp hardware outright since you paid for it upfront. Here is what to know about each item.
Refund window: SumUp offers a 30-day return policy on hardware purchased directly from them. After that, no returns.
Resale: SumUp readers have limited resale value since they only work with SumUp. The Solo terminal holds slightly more value on the second-hand market.
With Dojo: Your Dojo terminal is provided as part of the package, including a built-in receipt printer and 4G. No separate hardware purchase needed.
Common SumUp Cancellation Problems
Payout did not arrive after closing the account
If you closed before your last payout cleared, contact SumUp support through the app or website. The money is still legally yours and they must pay it out. It may take a few extra days as they process it manually. This is why we always recommend waiting for all payouts to land first.
Still being charged for SumUp subscriptions
Closing your SumUp account does not always cancel paid add-ons like SumUp POS or the Business Account. Check your bank statements for recurring SumUp charges after closure. Contact support to request a refund for any post-closure charges.
Cannot close account because of a pending chargeback
SumUp will not let you close your account if there is an open chargeback dispute. You need to wait for the dispute to be resolved, which can take up to 45 days. Once it is settled, you can close the account normally.
Lost my transaction history and need it for tax
Once closed, SumUp will not provide data access. Contact their support team and explain you need records for HMRC tax compliance. They may be able to provide a limited export, but there is no guarantee. Always export your data before closing.
Cancellation Timeline
SumUp is one of the fastest cancellations you can do. Here is the realistic timeline.
| Step | Timeframe | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| Process final transactions | Day 1 | Take your last payments through SumUp |
| Wait for payouts to clear | Day 1 to 3 | All pending payouts land in your bank (1-3 business days) |
| Export data | Day 3 | Download transaction history and sales reports |
| Cancel paid add-ons | Day 3 | Turn off SumUp POS, Business Account, or other subscriptions |
| Close account | Day 3 | Settings > Close Account. Instant. |
| Confirmation email | Day 3 | You receive email confirming the account is closed |
Real Numbers: What Switching Actually Saves
Based on a mobile barber client we switched in February 2026. Figures rounded for privacy.
With SumUp
Monthly card sales: £8,000
Transaction fees (1.69%): £135
Monthly subscription: £0
Total: £135/month
With Dojo (via CapExpand)
Monthly card sales: £8,000
Transaction fees (1.4%): £112
Monthly package: £20
Total: £132/month
Saving: £3/month (£36/year)
The fee saving is small at this volume, but the real value is next-day payouts (SumUp takes 1-3 days), a proper standalone terminal with 4G, and a built-in receipt printer. No exit fee to worry about.
Outgrowing SumUp? Here is what most of our customers switch to.
SumUp is fine when you are starting out, but most businesses hit a ceiling. The phone-connected reader is fiddly, payouts take days, and there is no receipt printer.
- Next-day payouts, 7 days a week
- Built-in 4G and WiFi
- Proper countertop terminal with receipt printer
- UK-based phone support
- No setup fees
