Does a business loan affect your personal credit score?
It can, in three ways. The search a lender runs at application may or may not be visible on your personal file, depending on whether it is soft or hard. Most lenders to small companies search the directors as well as the business. And if you sign a personal guarantee and the company later fails to repay, enforcement against you personally would be recorded. A business loan that is repaid on time generally leaves little trace on a director's own file.

Two files, not one
A limited company has its own credit record, drawn from sources such as Companies House filings and payment data. Its directors each have a personal file held by the credit reference agencies. When a lender assesses a loan to a small company, it generally reads both, because a company with little on its balance sheet is only as reliable as the people running it.
The Business Expert review of YouLend, published this month, describes credit reference searches on the business, the applicant, their financial associates, and every director or officer authorised to act for the company. That scope is typical of alternative lenders rather than unusual.
Soft searches and hard searches
Experian defines a soft credit check as an initial look at certain information on your report. Because other companies cannot see a soft search, Experian says it has no impact on your credit score. A hard credit check is a complete search. Each one is recorded, any company searching your file can see you applied for credit, and most stay on the report for 12 months. Experian adds that too many hard checks in a short period can affect your score for six months.
Lenders differ on when each type is used. Funding Circle states that a limited company can apply and get a loan decision without affecting its credit score. 365 Finance describes its check as a soft search. Whether a hard search follows at the point of offer or signing is a question for the individual lender, and their terms or FAQ is the place to find it.
| Event | Effect on a director's personal file |
|---|---|
| Soft search at enquiry | Visible to you only; no impact on score (Experian) |
| Hard search at application or offer | Recorded and visible to other lenders; most stay 12 months (Experian) |
| Signing a personal guarantee | iwoca states that signing alone does not affect your credit score; enforcement is what gets recorded |
| Guarantee called and enforced | Judgments or defaults would be recorded; a CCJ can stay for six years (Funding Options) |
The personal guarantee is the real link
For most unsecured lending to small companies, the director signs a personal guarantee. iwoca's unsecured business loans page describes it as “a commitment to take personal responsibility for the loan if the business can't repay it”, and for limited companies iwoca asks for a guarantee from a company director. Funding Circle states that if a loan is approved, a personal guarantee will be required.
iwoca states that signing a personal guarantee alone does not affect your credit score; it is enforcement that gets recorded. If the guarantee is called, the lender pursues the director as an individual, and any county court judgment or default that follows is recorded against the person, not the company. Rangewell notes that an unpaid CCJ shows for six years unless paid within 30 days. We cover what a guarantee contains on our personal guarantee explained page.
What happens on a missed payment
Arrears are first a matter between the lender and the company. How and when a lender reports missed payments, and to which file, varies by lender and is set out in the facility agreement. Business Expert notes that YouLend's terms allow collection costs to be recovered on arrears. The move from company problem to personal problem is the guarantee being called, which is why businesses commonly read the default clauses before the rate.
A merchant cash advance differs slightly because repayment is taken as a share of card sales, so a quiet month produces a smaller payment rather than a missed one. 365 Finance states there is no fixed term and no additional charge if the advance takes longer to repay. That does not remove the guarantee question; it changes how arrears arise. Our merchant cash advance page sets out the mechanics.
When borrowing in the company's name is not the point
If the aim is to keep personal and company finances fully separate, an unsecured loan with a guarantee does not achieve it. Products that lean on an asset or on receivables can reduce, though not always remove, the reliance on a director's covenant. Invoice finance lenders focus mainly on the creditworthiness of the customers who owe the invoices, and asset finance is secured on the equipment itself. Whether a guarantee is still required varies by lender and is a question to ask before signing, not after.
Checking your own position
Directors commonly look at their own file with Experian, Equifax or TransUnion before applying, and at the company record on Companies House, so there are no surprises in what the lender reads. CapExpand is an introducer. We connect UK limited companies and LLPs with funding providers; we do not run searches, do not see your file, and the decision sits with the provider.
Frequently asked questions
Does applying for a business loan leave a mark on my personal credit file?
It depends on the type of search. Experian says soft searches are not visible to companies and have no impact on your score, while hard searches are recorded, visible to other lenders, and mostly stay on the report for 12 months. Funding Circle states a limited company can apply without affecting its credit score, which points to a soft search at the decision stage. Each lender sets its own approach.
Why does a lender check the directors when the loan is for the company?
Because for most small companies the directors are the people standing behind the borrowing. The Business Expert review of YouLend describes credit reference searches on the business, the applicant, their financial associates, and every director or officer authorised to act for the company. That pattern is common across alternative lenders.
Does signing a personal guarantee show on my credit report?
iwoca states that signing a personal guarantee alone does not affect your credit score; it is enforcement that gets recorded. If the company fails to repay and the guarantee is called, any judgment or default that follows would be recorded. iwoca's unsecured business loans page describes a guarantee as "a commitment to take personal responsibility for the loan if the business can't repay it".
How long does a CCJ stay on my record?
Funding Options states a CCJ can appear on a credit record for six years, and Rangewell notes an unpaid CCJ shows for six years unless it is paid within 30 days. A satisfied CCJ is viewed more positively than an unsatisfied one.
Can I check what lenders will see?
Yes. Directors commonly review their own file with the credit reference agencies, Experian, Equifax and TransUnion, before applying, and check the company record at Companies House. CapExpand does not run searches and cannot see your file.
