The short answer
- No single published rate - every business is quoted individually.
- Advertised structure: 1.2% + 5p per payment, under £100k a year in card turnover.
- What that really costs: about 2.2% at a £5 average payment, 1.45% at £20, 1.25% at £100. The 5p is the half people miss.
Dojo prices each business individually, so the honest first answer is: whatever your quote says. The most recently advertised structure, reported by three review sites in August 2026, is a 1.2% blended rate across card types plus a 5p fee on each transaction, for businesses under £100,000 a year in card turnover, with custom pricing above that. Because of the 5p, the percentage you actually pay depends on how big your average payment is, and that is where most comparisons go wrong.

The effective rate at real payment sizes
Five pence is 1% of a £5 coffee and 0.05% of a £100 dinner. Applying the advertised structure across payment sizes:
| Average payment | Effective rate (1.2% + 5p) | Against published flat rates |
|---|---|---|
| £5 | 2.20% | Worse than SumUp (1.69%) and Square (1.75%) |
| £10 | 1.70% | Level with SumUp |
| £20 | 1.45% | Better than both flat rates |
| £40 | 1.33% | Better |
| £100 | 1.25% | Better |
The crossover with SumUp's 1.69% sits at roughly a £10 average payment; with Square's 1.75%, a little lower. Below it, the advertised Dojo structure loses on fees; above it, it wins, and the gap widens with the payment size. Worked monthly examples for a cafe, a salon and a shop are in the full Dojo review, and the fee comparison calculator runs the same arithmetic on your own figures.
The charges that are not a percentage
Dojo's terms confirm these fees exist and put the amounts in the fees schedule that comes with your quote; the figures below are what review sites report.
| Fee | Reported amount | Reported by |
|---|---|---|
| Refund | 50p per refund | mobiletransaction.org, checked Aug 2026 |
| Chargeback | £28 + VAT each | mobiletransaction.org, checked Aug 2026 |
| PCI non-compliance | £15 + VAT a month, not billed while compliant | mobiletransaction.org, checked Aug 2026 |
| Paper billing | £3.50 + VAT a month | merchantmachine.co.uk, checked Aug 2026 |
| Minimum monthly charge | £24.95 | merchanthq.co.uk, merchantmachine.co.uk, checked Aug 2026 |

Common questions
Does Dojo charge a monthly fee?
Review sites report a £24.95 minimum monthly charge, meaning transaction fees below that level are topped up to it, plus hardware rental if you rent rather than buy (£15 to £25 a month depending on the terminal) and an optional Plus software tier at £11.99 a month per location. The Essential software tier is free. As with the rates, the schedule that comes with your quote is the binding version.
Is 1.2% good for a card machine?
Against the flat-rate readers' published prices - SumUp 1.69%, Square 1.75%, checked August 2026 - a blended 1.2% is clearly lower, but the 5p per-transaction fee changes the arithmetic at small payment sizes. At a £5 average payment the advertised structure works out at about 2.2%, worse than any flat rate; at £40 it is about 1.33%, comfortably better. The percentage is only half the price; the pence are the other half.
Does Dojo charge more for credit cards or Amex?
The advertised structure is described by review sites as blended, meaning one rate across card types, for businesses under £100,000 a year. mobiletransaction.org reports surcharges on cards issued outside the UK: an extra 0.05% for EEA-issued cards and 0.95% for non-EEA cards. One source only, so confirm the international position on your own quote, especially if you serve tourists.
What does Dojo charge above £100,000 a year?
Custom pricing. Review sites describe individually negotiated rates above £100,000 in annual card turnover, with expertmarket.com describing a further bespoke tier above £1m. That is the level where quotes genuinely diverge between businesses, and where putting your statement next to the quote matters most.
