Business loans, finance and funding in Coventry
Where does a Coventry business borrow in 2026?
Coventry has 9,825 enterprises and, by the council's own count, 345 businesses for every 10,000 adults against 503 across England, so the firms that are here carry more weight each. The panel of 200+ lenders behind this page spans £5,000 to £25 million; 31 of its asset lenders fund factory plant and 28 fund electric vehicles (checked September 2026), which in this city is not a coincidence.

Business loans in Coventry
Coventry lending is shaped by who the customer is. A large share of the city's firms sell to a handful of vehicle makers and their first-tier suppliers, get paid on long terms and buy expensive kit, so the products that get used most are invoice finance from the 20 invoice lenders on our panel and asset finance from the 38 asset lenders. The 55 unsecured lenders cover the term loan behind them, and the 19 secured lenders take the case where the business owns its unit (checked September 2026).
For a worked figure take £100,000 unsecured, a sum a Binley engineering firm asks for when a new programme starts before the old one has paid. 45 lenders on the panel carry a product that reaches it, on terms of 1 to 120 months, with published floors from 4.1% to 70.8% and a median floor of 15.3% (checked September 2026). Where a firm lands inside that is decided by trading age, the last filed accounts and a director's homeownership, and 39 of the unsecured lenders do not require the home.
The role we play is the credit broker's. We size the case, match it against the criteria each lender publishes, and keep one named handler on the file to drawdown; the lender decides on its own numbers and pays us on completion. No file goes anywhere until you have seen the shortlist.
What we see from Coventry businesses
The press shop in Foleshill or the machining firm at Binley is the Coventry case in miniature. It holds a contract with a first-tier supplier, it is paid on 60 or 90 days, and the next programme needs a machine that costs more than the year's profit. The answer is two facilities rather than one loan: invoice finance through a lender such as Bibby to bring the receivables forward, and hire purchase through an asset lender such as Close Brothers to spread the machine over 48 or 60 months against the machine itself. The wages get paid whatever the customer's payment run does.
The city centre and its villages run on cards. FarGo Village, Earlsdon high street and the bars around Broadgate take most of their money through the terminal, and a lender such as YouLend prices an advance on that history rather than on the credit file. A venue taking £15,000 a month by card is a routine case; the one thing we warn against is a second advance stacked on the first, because a manageable share of takings becomes an unmanageable one quickly.
Then there are the 1,180 professional, scientific and technical firms, a good number of them spun out of the two universities and clustered around Westwood and Canley. They bill monthly, borrow on their accounts, and are term-loan cases from the first call. We would rather tell a six-person consultancy on day one that £200,000 is not available on £25,000 a month of billing than let a lender say it in week three.

Which funding type fits which Coventry business?
| Funding type | Best for | Typical range | Speed (lender-advertised) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Asset finance | Machine tools, presses and EV test kit for Binley and Foleshill suppliers | £1,000 to £50 million | 3 to 10 days |
| Invoice finance | Tier-two and tier-three suppliers paid on 60 to 90-day terms | £500 to £25 million | 1 to 2 weeks to set up |
| Merchant cash advance | FarGo Village, Earlsdon and Broadgate venues on card takings | £5k to £500k | 24 to 72 hours |
| Commercial mortgage | A trading company buying its unit on an Investment Zone site or elsewhere | £25,000 to £50 million | 6 to 12 weeks |
Every range is the span of product limits across the panel rather than what a Coventry firm will be offered, and the speeds are the lenders' own advertised figures. Each case is judged on its own numbers.
What lenders see in Coventry
Coventry counted 9,825 VAT or PAYE registered enterprises in March 2025 against 9,970 a year earlier, inside a West Midlands metropolitan county total of 92,560 (Nomis dataset NM_142_1, read 21 September 2026). Wholesale and retail leads at 1,835, then professional, scientific and technical firms and construction level at 1,180 each, transport and storage at 985, business administration at 785, accommodation and food at 665 and information and communication at 660. Manufacturing itself is 565 enterprises, fewer than the city's reputation suggests, though a good part of the supply chain sits just over the border in Warwickshire. 8,710 enterprises employ fewer than ten people and 55 employ 250 or more.
The council's One Coventry performance report for April 2024 to March 2025 gives the local reading: “In 2024, the number of businesses in Coventry fell slightly by 365, bringing the total to 9,970 enterprises”, and 345 businesses per 10,000 adults against 391 for the West Midlands, 528 for Warwickshire and 503 for England. The same report counts 561 businesses given in-depth support through Business Growth West Midlands in the year, up from 480, £2.39m of capital grants to 150 businesses that brought £3.42m of business investment with them, 88 jobs created and 39 safeguarded.
Regionally, the ONS bulletin of 24 September 2025 gave the West Midlands 216,000 businesses, 7.9% of the UK total, and the British Business Bank's West Midlands factsheet of 7 October 2025 counted 9,786 SME loan and overdraft facilities approved in 2024, up 48%, worth £1,204m and up 43% by value, with 49% of the region's SMEs willing to use finance to grow, a jump of 20 points. The Bank of England's Agents reported on 11 September 2026 that “Increased exports are supporting slight growth in manufacturing output”. In Coventry that is the supply chain the panel is priced for.
The Investment Zone, the grants and the regional fund
The Coventry and Warwick Investment Zone takes in Greenpower Park, SEGRO Park Coventry, Whitley South and Whitley East, approved as a key strategic site inside the West Midlands Investment Zone in 2024. The council's scrutiny report of 25 March 2026 sets out what a firm locating there gets: full business rates relief for five years, stamp duty relief on commercial land and buildings, an employer National Insurance threshold of £25,000 for new employees for 36 months, enhanced structures and buildings allowances at 10% a year and 100% first-year allowances on plant and machinery, all available until September 2034. Its own illustration is a company in a 20,000 square metre building saving more than £4.7m in tax over five years, and it puts the site's potential at up to 6,000 jobs if fully developed.
For established firms the council runs a grants programme through Business Growth West Midlands, funded by the UK Shared Prosperity Fund: the published cases include a £25,000 grant to move an exhibition firm into a 20,000 square foot unit and £13,100 to a ten-year-old engineering business. Regionally, the Midlands Engine Investment Fund II lends £25,000 to £2m across the West Midlands, with BCRS Business Loans on the smaller band to £100,000 and Frontier Development Capital above it; BCRS reported £5.2m placed with 82 businesses since February 2024 in a release dated 26 May 2026. None of these is arranged through us, and all of them are public routes a Coventry firm can pursue alongside a panel lender.
What they do is put fit-outs, machines and vehicles on the agenda, and those are financed through the panel: 22 asset lenders fund fit-out, 18 fund EV charging and 25 will defer the VAT on a purchase (checked September 2026), which matters when the 100% first-year allowance is the reason for buying in this tax year.
Units, offices and the criteria that decide a Coventry case
A trading company buying the unit it rents at Ansty Park or on the Foleshill Road is a commercial mortgage case, and the panel is deep there: 32 lenders take industrial premises, 36 take offices and 31 take leisure (checked September 2026). Where a seller wants completion inside a month, a bridge from one of 53 bridging lenders holds the purchase until the mortgage completes, with the exit visible to the lender from day one. For property-secured lending we work with UK limited companies and LLPs only, for business and commercial purposes.
On the criteria, three things decide most Coventry cases before price does. 21 unsecured lenders will consider a business trading under a year. 24 accept minor adverse credit older than 24 months and 19 asset lenders will fund a business that has posted a loss, since the security is the machine. 39 unsecured lenders do not need a director who owns a home. Those three are checked against your figures before any lender hears your name, and the asset finance page sets out how hire purchase, leasing and refinance each repay.
The panel counts were taken September 2026 from available products only. They describe the panel on that date rather than a decision on any Coventry business, and the composition changes with every re-pull.
Where we work in Coventry and Warwickshire
Our office is in Annesley, Nottinghamshire, an hour and a quarter from Coventry by the M1 and M69, and we say so rather than borrow a Warwick Road address. Coventry, Kenilworth, Leamington, Warwick, Rugby, Nuneaton and Bedworth all reach the same named handler by phone and email, and the drive happens when it is worth it. The West Midlands county's 92,560 enterprises (Nomis, March 2025) are more than three times our home county, and Coventry is the corner of it closest to us.
To be exact: CapExpand Ltd is a broker of business finance, a credit broker and not a lender, and we arrange without advising. Investment, pension and tax advice, residential mortgages and personal loans sit outside what we do.
We work with UK limited companies, LLPs, sole traders and partnerships.
The panel behind this page
We can place unsecured business loans cases with 55 lenders, and 200+ lenders across all products on our panel. That range matters more than any single rate: the lender that suits a five-year-old limited company with clean accounts is rarely the one that suits a seasonal business or a director with a past blip, and a broker with a shallow panel has to force your case into whichever box it holds.
Names you may recognise on the panel
Examples from our panel as at September 2026, not an endorsement of any lender and not the full list. We check criteria first and put your case only to lenders whose requirements you fit. The full panel by product is in our lender directory, and how we choose is set out on our how we work page.
Coventry business loan questions
Can a Coventry business get a loan through CapExpand?
Yes, if it is trading and the purpose is commercial. A named case handler sizes it on the last filed accounts and recent statements and puts it to the lenders on our panel of 200+ whose published criteria it meets (checked September 2026). Each lender decides for itself; our job is the arranging, done from Nottinghamshire by phone and email.
What finance suits a tier-two supplier to the car plants?
Usually a facility against the invoices and hire purchase on the machines. 20 invoice lenders on the panel will advance against a ledger paid on 60 or 90-day terms, and 31 asset lenders fund factory plant (checked September 2026). Which mix and which lender is a pricing decision for the lender, not a recommendation from us.
Does a FarGo Village or Earlsdon venue qualify for an advance?
On its card takings, yes. A merchant cash advance is sized on the monthly terminal total and repaid as a share of each day’s takings, so a bar or cafe putting £15,000 a month through cards is an ordinary case. A quieter Monday costs less than a busy Saturday, which is the design of the product.
Is the Investment Zone tax relief something you arrange?
No. The Coventry and Warwick Investment Zone is a government scheme with its own rules, offering business rates relief and other tax incentives to firms locating on its sites until September 2034. It changes what a firm wants to spend on a fit-out or machinery; the spending itself is financed through lenders, which is where we come in.
We only started trading in 2025. Who on the panel will look at us?
21 of the 55 unsecured lenders will consider a business trading under a year, and 14 of the invoice lenders will fund a start-up that has invoices from a creditworthy customer (checked September 2026). Expect smaller sums until the first accounts are filed.
How far is your office from Coventry?
About an hour and a quarter. We are at Pure Offices in Annesley, Nottinghamshire, and the M1 and M69 bring us to Coventry when a meeting is worth it. Most of a case does not need one and runs by phone and email.
What does a Coventry business pay CapExpand?
Nothing. The lender you complete with pays us a commission on completion and your cost is unchanged; ask and we will tell you the amount on your deal. Lending is subject to status and the lender's own checks.
Do you work with sole traders in Coventry?
Yes. We work with sole traders and partnerships as well as limited companies and LLPs for business loans, asset finance, invoice finance and merchant cash advances. Property-secured lending (commercial mortgages, bridging, development and buy-to-let) is for limited companies and LLPs only. Lender criteria differ by structure, so tell us how you trade and we will go to the right part of the panel.
